Pilates versus Yoga: Choose Which Suits You
If you are among those who are finding it difficult to decide on
whether to attend Yoga classes or join Pilates, then
read on. Most people think Yoga and Pilates are the
same thing due to the similarity in form and process of the
exercises. But in reality the two are quite unique and serve
different purposes. So before you choose which one is best for you
it's important to know which one is best suited to your individual
needs.
Similarities between Yoga and Pilates
First let us look at the similarities between Yoga and Pilates that
cause many to get confused between the two. Both exercises are done
on a mat and do not involve rigorous or heavy movement of the body.
The positions of the exercise in the both forms are similar and they
focus on the importance of balance and fluid movements.
Differences between Yoga and Pilates
Yoga is a meditative exercise. It is aimed at attaining a
sense of relaxation by bringing unity and harmony
between the body, mind and spirit. It is useful for those who
are looking for the growth of the inner self. On the other hand,
Pilates is useful for those who are looking to develop their outward
physical features. Pilates can lead to weight loss and
toning of muscles.
While Pilates focus is primarily on the body, Yoga is more holistic
and covers mind and spirit too. Therefore Yoga is extremely
beneficial for people who want to beat stress. At the end of
a one hour Yoga session, it leaves you with a sense of
freedom and feeling more energetic. It’s no surprise then that
executives and celebrities who lead highly stressful lives often
find relief through Yoga.
Pilates on the other hand is useful for those who want to improve
their physical appearance by keeping their bodies in shape. If
you are interested in improving your posture or in achieving more
flexibility, Pilates is the exercise for you. Unlike Yoga, while
practicing Pilates one may even be put through weight training.
Yoga is only about body movements and breathing. There are no
machines used while doing Yoga but people who do Pilates are
expected to use some equipment to help tone up the body muscles. It
is very beneficial for dancers, sportsmen and those recovering from
physical injuries.
While Pilates uses the same techniques as Yoga, the impact is not on
your spirituality but on physical muscles. Yoga is a more complete
form of exercise as it addresses all three aspects of body, mind and
soul. The ideal thing is to practice both forms of exercise,
as Yoga addresses the inner self while Pilates makes sure that you
are physically fit.
But if you don’t have the time to practice both forms, then
identify the areas you want to address through the exercise.
Practicing either Yoga or Pilates will not harm you, but choosing
the right form according to your need could you save you from being
disappointed as you might just be indulging in something without
achieving the desired results.
