The Yoga Experience - Beginners
The Importance of Yoga
Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy which has gained worldwide
acceptance, including America. Yoga not only provides peace
to the inner soul and mind of the yoga practitioner, but also
provides renewed energy, relaxation to the body and relief from
various ailments. It unites the soul, mind and the body.
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning “union or joining.” Union or joining
should not be mistaken for their literal meanings but these words
mean doing physical yoga exercises for spiritual union of the mind
and the body.
Different poses of yoga exercise are known as “asanas.”
There are eight types of asana which provide mental and spiritual
peace. The word has become synonymous with relaxation through
meditation in the present context of yoga practice being
followed all over the world.
Yoga asanas are a good form of exercise to relieve stress from your
body and to calm the mind. Yoga exercises are very simple exercises
for which you need not have deep knowledge and concepts behind the
yoga philosophy, but what you may need is the basic information
required to apply particular yoga exercise in your everyday life.
Yoga is very useful in improving your posture and breathing
problems. It increases your overall body strength and flexibility
and the biggest advantage you get from yoga is calmness, soothing of
the nerves and improvement in your focus and concentration.
Yoga for Beginners
Yoga attracts so many of beginners because of the results that are
quickly evident from those who have practiced yoga for years. As a
beginner you can start yoga as a meditation practice for your
spiritual requirements or you can start yoga to keep yourself
mentally and physically fit.
Before undertaking yoga as an exercise you need to educate yourself
about the possible health and physical benefits you are looking to
achieve.
Yoga involves physical endurance and stretching of the body.
You may not be able to bear the stress associated with various yoga
exercises. It is very important that you get yourself medically
examined, especially from an orthopedic doctor, before you decide on
a course of yoga training exercises. Try to understand the
advantages and disadvantages of doing yoga from your physician.
Another important aspect that must be kept in mind is the selection
of the right type of yoga instructor. You also must have
sufficient time to do yoga exercises. Select the best time suitable
to you for doing yoga when you can give it the attention it
deserves. You must be aware of your limitations and do not over
extend yourself and try to do postures that may emotionally or
physically cause you damage.
There are plenty of good books out about the benefits of each pose.
Read one before you begin your own yoga practice.
Don't jump into doing difficult exercises right in the beginning.
Start with simple exercises that can be done without any discomfort
to your body and then only proceed to more difficult exercises under
the guidance of an expert yoga instructor. IT is critical not to
push your body past the point of tension. Learn to release into the
tension. The idea is to release tension not cause more of it.
Wear the right type of clothes for your yoga exercises. Since yoga
exercises are typically conducted on a flat surface, make sure you
have a pillow and a soft mat under you to avoid discomfort and
possible injury to yourself.
