Equipping Yourself for Yoga

Yoga has become part of household activities in some American families. Medical studies have revealed that all most all the diseases in humans are due to stress. If stress can be released from the body, most of the diseases cannot find a friendly host. There is no better way than getting rid of stress than through yoga exercises. As more and more people are getting relieved of their stress through yoga, this ancient art of yoga is becoming more popular by the day.

Numerous research studies have proved the effectiveness of yoga in reducing stress and providing much wanted relaxation to the mind and body. It also increases a person’s strength, generates positive energy, improves individual’s mental alertness, posture, concentration, focus and memory as well as builds body muscles.

Besides the above, practicing yoga regularly can reduce blood pressure, relieve pain and improves the digestive system.

No wonder yoga has become so popular.

In order to enjoy the benefits of yoga you must equip yourself properly and at the same time, if you want, looking smart in a class full of people like yourself.

The first thing you require is suitable clothes, which preferably should be made of cotton. You can either wear a pant or a short in which you feel most comfortable, but be cautious they should not be made of Lycra material, as it will cause you to slip in some yoga poses. You should be able to breathe freely in the clothes that you wear for yoga classes. This is important for beginners. If you want to look sexy, tight body fitting clothes will do but you may feel a little uneasy doing some yoga poses in this type of clothing.

You do not need any footwear for yoga classes as all yoga exercises are done barefoot, but you'll most certainly need the footwear after the yoga classes are over.

All yoga exercises are done on a hard surface, but the human body requires a soft base to do yoga exercises for which a soft cushioned mat will be required. It provides safety from injury apart from providing comfort and a particular "place" for your exercises. Eventually our mat will take on the vibration of your yoga practice and further enhance relaxation.

In addition to the above, another popular piece of equipment comes from the Iyangar tradition. The Iyangar style of yoga propagates that to derive the maximum benefits of yoga; your alignment in every yoga pose should be proper. This is important for beginners who should use props and other optional yoga equipment to bring about the correct alignment of the yoga pose.

There is other optional yoga equipment, which may be useful and save you from injury. For example, you can use blankets for doing yoga exercises and lying down during rest periods after each yoga exercise. Blocks can be used in standing positions to improve your alignment. Some of the people who are unable to reach their feet and hold on to them while bending forward in standing position may require straps to hold them while bending forward. The strap will stop them from rolling over. Use discretion according to your personal ability or level of practice.
