Yoga Benefits - The Road to Nirvana
Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to join or to unite. Yoga unites the
human
soul with the divine spiritual power leading to bliss and liberation.
Yoga and
meditation combined is the mysterious ladder, which reaches from earth to
heaven, leading us from ignorance to knowledge, darkness to light and mortality
to immortality.
The practice of yoga is an ancient Indian art. According to Indian philosophy,
the infinite Brahma not only created the world but also entered into it. He
dwells in the heart of all creatures as their Atman and is the controller of
their personality. According to Upanishads, the sense organs of a human being
face outward. Thoughts in the human mind are affected by the sensations
experienced by the sense organs as a result of outward influences. These
sensations divert the mind from contemplation on the Supreme Being inside. Yoga
restrains the mind from a flood of various forms of thoughts. It sublimates the
negative thoughts without letting them pollute the system to cause various
bodily ailments. It’s the power of mind over body.
The second chapter of the Bhagavad Gita has this simple verse which says
‘Turbulent by nature, the senses forcibly carry away the mind of even a wise
man, who is endeavoring to control them’. ‘Therefore, having controlled one’s
senses, one should fix one’s mind in Me, He whose senses are mastered, has a
stable mind and healthy body.’
Yoga is based on the interconnectedness of mind, body and soul. It is possible
to attain the highest spiritual consciousness through the practice of yogic
postures, simple stretching exercises, breath control and meditation. A
disciplined mind leads to healthier body. One is suffused with inner peace and
general happiness with regular practice of yoga.
